The Catherine Malandrino Fall Couture collection read more like a museum exhibition than a fashion show. Stepping out of the elevator onto the 11th floor of the old New York Times building, I was surrounded by models on pedestals and sharply dressed onlookers. It was if the models acted as the audience, while the attendees scurried around on the runway.
Appropriate that French designer, Malandrino, chose to theme her collection after a Parisian winter. Malandrino encompassed her signature pointelle knitting in various pieces, as well as introduced a strong winter trend for fur bombers. Texture played an underlying role in the theme for the collection, from quilted fur to crocheted netting. The 70s silhouette was carried over into the fall with wide leg pants, large brimmed sun hats, and pleated A-line skirts. With lush fabrics and chic silhouettes, the models acted as the brushstrokes to Malandrino's masterpiece, backdropped against her easel -- the downtrodden loft overlooking Times Square.
